The Great New Zealand Bike Ride

Sydney on the Run and Bicycle Victoria invite you to join us for a nine day cycling adventure in New Zealand.  The ride is scheduled for Feb 7-20, 2004*.  Mark the date in your diary and start making plans to participate.

Small rural towns, world class cities, mountains, vast plains, beaches --- New Zealand has it all.

Christchurch will be the arrival/departing point for the tour. There are direct flights from Australia's major cities to Chirstchurch. Cyclists arriving from the northern hemisphere will likely connect to a domestic flight in Auckland.

*Transportation from the ride finish (Thur Feb 19th) at Greymouth to Christchurch will be by train (The Trans Alpine). There is an option to stay in Greymouth for the night, departing for Chirstchurch on Feb 20th.

QUICK LOOK

Keep in mind that this is still preliminary . The route can change a bit as the final details are worked out. We'll post any changes plus additonal information on the optional coach service (Feb 16th) through the glacier region.

Saturday February 7th, 2004 will be the start date. We'll travel by coach from Christchurch to Tekapo. On Sunday we'll start our 12 day cycling adventure. The ride ends (Feb 19th) with a spectacular train ride from Greymouth to Christchurch. If you want to do some sightseeing in Greymouth, there is an option to return to Christchurch on the Feb 20th train.

There is a rest day (Thur. Feb. 12th) planned at Queenstown.

Monday, Feb 16th - There is optional coach service on this day. Coach tour will allow time to visit the glacier region.

The TranzAlpine - In a remarkably short journey - little more than 4 hours - The World famous TranzAlpine train leaves Christchurch on the east coast, crosses the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, winds its way through the stunning Waimakariri Gorge, passes over massive viaducts, crosses New Zealand's greatest mountain range, the Southern Alps, and travels through lush beech forests and past serene lakes, before arriving in Greymouth on the beautiful West Coast. We'll be doing this in reverse.
